Making Maryland Schools Safe

Making Maryland Schools Safe

Developing and maintaining safe schools is a complex undertaking but an absolutely essential one. We owe it our children, to adult students, to teachers and school staffs all across this state to provide educational environments that are conducive to learning and growing.

Creating Positive Environments

Maryland boasts some of the best schools in the country. That's no accident. It's the result of a well-coordinated effort on the part of administrators, educators, parents, students and community members, among others. In order to maintain safe environments in which students' abilities to learn and grow are maximized, schools must implement safety plans and comprehensive prevention programs that address any threat to their health physical and emotional safety.

The challenges our schools face today are many and more complex than ever: students possessing weapons, gang recruitment and rivalry, drugs and drug trafficking, bullying, depression, gender bias and more. In order to continue our outstanding schools record, the Maryland Center for School Safety has been charged with coordinating activities and disseminating information that empowers all school stakeholders to identify, mitigate and prevent such threats.

Whatever your role in the subject of school safety, you should be able to find valuable information, ideas and inspiration in the pages of this site.
